The University of Houston softball team hosted its annual youth clinic over the weekend, welcoming over 200 young athletes from across the Houston area for a day of instruction, inspiration, and fun.
Players and coaches led sessions on hitting, fielding, pitching, and baserunning, breaking down fundamentals in age-appropriate ways that kept the young participants engaged and excited. The clinic, now in its sixth year, has become one of the program's most beloved community events.
"Seeing the smiles on these kids' faces is the best part of what we do," said the team's senior catcher, who led the hitting stations. "Some of them are just starting their softball journey, and if we can make that experience positive, maybe they'll fall in love with the game like we did."
Head Coach emphasized the importance of community engagement: "We're not just building a softball program — we're building a culture. These clinics are a way for our players to develop leadership skills while giving back to the community that supports us."
The clinic also served as a recruiting showcase of sorts, giving young athletes and their families a firsthand look at UH's facilities and the quality of the coaching staff. Several current players first visited campus during this same clinic years ago.
The day concluded with an autograph session and a scrimmage where clinic participants got to watch the Cougars in action. The roar from the young fans as Houston players hit home runs during the scrimmage was a reminder of the impact that college athletes can have as role models.
