A commitment graphic freezes a recruiting story at its prettiest moment. The uniform is clean. The lighting is perfect. The future fits neatly beneath a school logo.
Then Thursday comes, and somebody lines up across from you intending to ruin the picture.Eleven of Houston’s 16 commitments in the 2027 class play October 15–17, from the Houston area to North Texas. Five have an open week. The action starts Thursday night and runs through Saturday afternoon, another look at the habits these prospects could bring to Willie Fritz’s program.

COOGS 365 SPORTS | CAP-TEX GAME OF THE WEEK
Dickinson at Barbers Hill
Friday, Oct. 16, 7 p.m. CT
Houston commit to watch: DL Raiden Cook
Friday’s spotlight belongs in the trenches.
Sacks make the highlight reel. Disrupting an offense before the quarterback drops back is how a defensive lineman takes over a game. Against Dickinson, watch where Cook finishes relative to where he starts. Penetration matters when it breaks the blocking scheme. It becomes a problem when it pulls him out of his assignment and opens a lane behind him.
The job is to be disruptive without being undisciplined: strike, leverage, find the football, finish. And when two blockers turn toward him, watch what happens around him. A lineman can create a teammate’s tackle without appearing anywhere in the box score.
GAMES TO CIRCLE
Emerson at Panther Creek
Thursday, Oct. 15, 7 p.m. CT
Commit to watch: Jason Wooden
Houston’s newest recruiting momentum takes the stage at Ford Center. Wooden’s work away from the ball deserves as much attention as his touches. Does he create separation with purpose? Does he finish the block after the play moves past him? The football finds only so many players on a snap. Effort leaves evidence everywhere.
Midlothian at Burleson Centennial
Friday, Oct. 16, 7 p.m. CT
Commit to watch: LB Jerrell Bridges
A road game puts a linebacker’s fundamentals under the microscope. The evaluation starts before contact: how fast he diagnoses, how cleanly he works through traffic, whether he arrives under control. The first step decides whether he meets the runner in the hole or spends the snap chasing him. Watch his eyes, then his feet. The collision is the final paragraph of a much longer play.
New Waverly at Newton
Friday, Oct. 16, 7 p.m. CT
Commit to watch: RB Kendray “KJ” Porter Jr.
Track the yards that require patience. Porter’s reads, cuts and finish through contact matter as much as the explosive runs. The revealing carry might gain four yards. On a crowded down with a defender waiting, four can be excellent work.
Cypress Ranch at Cypress Park
Saturday, Oct. 17, 1 p.m. CT
Commit to watch: QB Braden Baker
Saturday afternoon offers a look at Houston’s future quarterback. Watch the decisions between the highlights: the ball out on time, the available completion taken, the offense kept on schedule. Arm talent can rescue a play. Judgment can prevent the need for one. The most instructive sequence may be an ordinary drive built from sound decisions.
THE REST OF THE SLATE
Thursday
6:30 p.m. CT: CB Kameron Roberson and Cypress Springs host George Ranch. Watch his leverage, his response to the receiver’s release and his recovery without surrendering position. At corner, a quiet stretch can be worth investigating.
6:30 p.m. CT: OL Samuel Thiergood and Randle host Pasadena. Offensive line evaluation rewards repetition. Watch first contact, balance and whether he sustains a block without reaching.
7 p.m. CT: OT Thomas Muiruri and V.R. Eaton host Boswell. Length becomes useful through footwork and hand placement. Does he stay balanced through contact when a defender changes direction?
Friday, all 7 p.m. CT
Logan Debose and St. Thomas host Concordia Lutheran. Track his positioning through the entire route, especially when the receiver changes speed or direction. A defensive back’s discipline gets tested well before the pass arrives.
Cael Thigpen and Jersey Village host Cypress Falls. The edge assignment demands aggression and restraint. Can he threaten the backfield while protecting the perimeter? The quickest route to the quarterback isn’t always the correct one.
Shahariam Thurston and Arlington Lamar visit Arlington Sam Houston. Watch his patience at the line, his transition out of the backpedal and his composure when the ball is in the air. Closing distance matters. Finishing the coverage matters more.
OPEN THIS WEEK
Marvin Joseph and Marcus Watson Jr. (Central, Baton Rouge): next up Oct. 23 at Catholic (Baton Rouge)
Tavon Bolden (Atascocita): Oct. 23 vs. Kingwood
Mo Poko (Katy Jordan): Oct. 22 at Cinco Ranch
Kamryn Harris (Pearland): Oct. 23 vs. Sam Rayburn
The college destination is public. The work remains local: a district opponent, a crowded running lane, a receiver trying to steal a step. Before these prospects can help build Houston’s Saturdays, they have business to finish under their own lights.
