Some quarterbacks wait their whole careers for a day like this. Conner Weigman waited, worked, and then picked apart a ranked defense on the biggest stage Houston has hosted this season.
On Monday, the Big 12 made it official: the fifth-year quarterback is its Offensive Player of the Week, the fourth time he has collected that honor. Given what he did to No. 18 Oklahoma State, the only surprise is that the league needed a few days to say it.
The line reads like a typo. Twenty-four completions on 33 attempts, a .727 clip. A career-high 343 yards. Five touchdown passes. Houston walked out of TDECU with its first-ranked win of the season, 35-32, and the man who made it happen was the one who has been making it happen all year.
Afterward, Weigman kept the explanation simple. “I know what I’m capable of,” Weigman said. “I know I can go out and make those throws and make those plays and do it at a high level and at a consistent level. We have a great o-line to be able to run the ball, but when it’s time to put the ball in the air, let’s go. Let’s go make plays.”
History, in the Cougars' record book
Start with the program context, because it matters. No Houston quarterback had thrown for that many yards in a ranked matchup since Case Keenum in 2012. Nobody in a Cougars uniform had ever thrown more touchdown passes in one. That is not a good night. That is a night people will measure against for a long time.
The national view is just as loud. Weigman is the first quarterback this season to throw for five touchdowns against a Top 25 opponent. He is also the first FBS quarterback to post at least 343 yards and five scores in a game since South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers did it against Missouri in 2024. In Week 7, nobody threw more touchdown passes, and only five quarterbacks threw for more yards.
Not a one-week story
Here is what separates this from a hot hand: it was not a fluke, and it was not the first time he has done it. Saturday was Weigman's second career game with five touchdown passes and his first since 2023. He has now thrown three or more touchdown passes in five games this season, including back-to-back weeks, and he is the eighth FBS quarterback to throw four or more in consecutive games.
That is the kind of consistency that turns a good offense into a problem for everybody left on the schedule.
The season-long numbers back it up. Weigman has 20 touchdown passes, second in the nation, and 1,771 passing yards, 16th. His 174.1 passer rating leads the Big 12 and sits inside the top 10 among all FBS quarterbacks. And he ranks second nationally in points responsible for, with 156, a number that tells you he is not just throwing it well. He is deciding games.
Head coach Willie Fritz has watched the improvement up close, and he did not hedge after the Oklahoma State game. “I think he is a really good quarterback.
"I’m glad we got him,” Fritz said. “We wouldn’t trade him for anybody. He is a darn good quarterback and he just keeps getting a little better every single week. As I said before, he’s smart, he’s really accurate, and he can also run the ball. He’s not a statue back there. He’s a very good football player and we are fortunate to have him.”
Teammate Will James didn’t flinch at Saturday’s postgame press conference, either. He called Weigman the “best quarterback in the Big 12.” The league-leading passer rating makes that a hard argument to dispute.

Weigman, a Golden Arm Top 15 finalist in his final collegiate season, has said he knows what he is capable of, and the numbers say he has earned that confidence. A top-10 road game with GameDay in town is the next test.
This Saturday in Salt Lake City will show whether that confidence travels.
