One stat should drive how you bet this game, and it came from Cincinnati. In its Big 12 opener, Kansas State’s defense surrendered 250-plus rushing yards. Teams can survive a bad half, but that many yards on the ground means the front isn’t fitting its gaps. Houston is coming to town with the offense best equipped to take advantage.

The No. 22 Cougars (4-1, 1-1 Big 12) are +120 road underdogs at Bill Snyder Family Stadium, with kickoff at 3:30 p.m. ET on FOX. They’ve won two in a row, most recently by rallying past UCF 27-17 after falling behind 17-0. Kansas State (3-1, 0-1) is a 2.5-point favorite and is trying to bounce back from its first defeat.

Why Houston’s Formula Travels

The UCF comeback didn’t hinge on a splash play. A seven-play, 75-yard march in the third quarter did it. Houston ran on first down, kept itself out of long yardage, protected the football and handed UCF’s defense the same problem again and again. After a few of those series, the Knights could no longer get off blocks. Nothing about that approach depends on home-field energy. It depends on assignments and effort, and Houston can bring both anywhere.

Conner Weigman is what makes it work. Against UCF he passed for 239 yards and scored three times on the ground. He has 11 touchdown passes and six rushing touchdowns on the season, plus about 150 rushing yards. Defenders have to treat him as a runner, and that changes how they play every down. A safety who has to watch the quarterback isn’t helping against the handoff, and a linebacker who has to chase him can’t scrape to the ball.

The backs don’t need that help to be productive. Two Houston runners have topped 300 yards, and the team is averaging around 229 rushing yards a game. Kansas State has to decide which threat to stop first. Overplay the handoff and Weigman keeps it. Respect the quarterback and a back finds a crease. The defense that wins that argument is the one that tackles well and holds its ground, and the Wildcats failed both tests last time out.

What Could Go Wrong for the Cougars

The Wildcats are dangerous, and the scoring average of 40.5 points a game proves it. Avery Johnson has thrown for 910 yards and seven touchdowns, and he’s added 291 yards and three scores on the ground. The key for Houston’s defense is first down. If Johnson gets Kansas State into short third downs, the Cougars’ linebackers and safeties will start guessing, and guessing against a quarterback like that ends badly. Houston also has to keep its secondary disciplined and keep its pads low in the fourth quarter, when this kind of game gets decided.

There’s history here too. The Cougars beat Kansas State 24-19 in 2024 as 12.5-point underdogs, so the all-time series is tied 1-1.

Prediction: Houston 31, Kansas State 28

Moneyline: BET HOUSTON (+120). This is a strength-versus-weakness matchup, and the price is good. The Cougars run the ball for more than 200 yards a game against a defense that just gave up 250-plus on the ground. A ranked team that wins at the line of scrimmage should not be paying a premium to be a road underdog, and at +120 it isn’t.

Against the spread: PASS. Houston has covered in two of five games. Its only game as an underdog was a loss that still covered. Kansas State has missed the number in back-to-back weeks and sits at 2-2 against the spread overall. If the Cougars are winning outright, the moneyline pays more than the 2.5 points would protect. There’s no edge on the spread that the moneyline doesn’t already offer.

Every snap in Manhattan will come down to who wins the line of scrimmage, and the Cougars have the edge there. Take the plus money and let the ground game do the work. Bet smart, dress sharp. Snaps Clothing Co.
