Aaron Grant is no stranger to Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Shroeder Park. The freshmen second baseman hit a grand slam in the first inning as a member of the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff Golden Lions on March 6 against Houston.

Now, Grant will look to flip the script and help the Cougars as the talented infielder committed to Houston back in June on X, formerly known as Twitter, to be on Will Davis’s Cougars baseball program.
“Houston is getting a young player with a lot of potential,” Pine Bluff Commercial sports reporter Tanner Spearman said. “Despite being a freshman, only two players on the team appeared in more games than Grant, so he comes with plenty of experience already. Only three players had more at-bats, and he led the team in batting average and home runs. His offense made him an every-game player.”
Davis has been building his new Houston team and said that recruiting and his job have been a whirlwind in an interview with Space City Houston reporter Julia Morales on Monday night as the Astros hosted the Minnesota Twins. Davis threw out a ceremonial first pitch along with Houston women’s basketball coach Matthew Mithchell on Monday.
Grant showed a lot of maturity at the plate in his freshman season and was named the SWAC Freshman of the Year after batting. 355 with eight home runs, 62 hits, and 50 RBI for the Golden Bears.
The 6-foot-1 standout had ups and downs as a freshman but showed up every day to improve his game and help the Golden Lions.

Grant, who is a Savannah, Texas native, isn’t scared to put in hard work on the baseball field during practice when no one is watching.
“He got off to a slow start, which is to be expected from a true freshman, but got more comfortable as the season progressed,” Spearman said.
"He finished the season on a 17-game hitting streak and hit 6 of 10 combined in UAPB’s final two games of the SWAC tournament. He was one of two Golden Lions on the SWAC All-Tournament Team."
At the SWAC Tournament Grant has a .529 batting average with nine hits, including three doubles, three runs, and four RBI.
Grant will look to build off his freshman campaign with a breakout sophomore season for Davis and the Cougars.
He’s not a finished project yet, but Grant can be an impact player for the Cougars next season.
“His strength has been his offense, while fielding was a weakness in the first half of the season," Spearman said. “His .905 fielding percentage was the team’s worst by a position player, and he made a team-high 19 errors. However, he committed just two errors in his final 18 games and had a 1.000 fielding percentage in the SWAC tournament, showing significant improvement down the stretch.
