Houston got in on the ground floor with 2027 combo guard Payton Jones back in May, and every session since has looked like a good reason why. Jones' recruiting stock has been climbing fast all spring, and that trajectory didn't slow down as the Summer Live Period officially kicked into gear this week.
The Under Armour Next Circuit made its latest stop at LakePoint Sports and Events Center in Cartersville, Georgia, and the gym did what LakePoint gyms do in July: pack the sidelines with some of the top prospects in the country and just as many college coaches and assistants leaning in for a closer look.
It's the kind of environment where reputations get made in a single session, and once again, Jones made sure his name was part of that conversation, emerging as one of the top performers to come out of Thursday's action.
Houston's staff wasn't just watching from a distance, either. Members of the Cougars' coaching staff were on hand specifically for Jones' games, part of a recruitment they've pushed hard since first jumping in back in May.
It's easy to see why they keep showing up. What separates Jones right now is tempo control; he doesn't just get into the paint, he dictates when and how the defense has to react to him.

He strings together change-of-pace moves off ball screens, presses his advantage the moment a defender loses ground, and consistently reads the second and third defenders instead of forcing the issue.
When help arrives, he's already found the outlet; when it doesn't, he's finishing through contact rather than settling for a floater.
The physical tools point to real defensive upside down the line: good length for the position, quick hands, and the kind of frame that should add strength without losing lateral quickness.
Where he's still a projection is the jump shot and the discipline to stay attached on the other end for a full possession; both are fixable with reps, and neither kept him from controlling Thursday's game for a Gulf Coast Shores team he led in scoring with 15 points.
The rankings back up what the eye test shows. The four-star guard checks in as the No. 50 overall prospect in the 2027 class and the No. 8 guard in the country—numbers that have only trended in the right direction as the spring and summer have unfolded.
Houston wasn't the only program with a presence in the stands for Jones on Thursday. Coaches and assistants from Clemson, TCU, Oklahoma State, and South Florida were all on hand, a reminder that this recruitment is only going to get more competitive as the July evaluation period rolls on.
But Houston has been one of the steadiest, most consistent programs in Jones' recruitment since May, and based on what was on display at LakePoint, there's no reason to expect that to change anytime soon.
The Live Period is just getting started. If Thursday was any indication, so is the chase for Payton Jones.
