The Houston Cougars have made a significant addition to their roster with the signing of guard Dedan Thomas Jr., who officially became a Cougar on Wednesday. Transitioning from LSU, where he showcased his talents in a competitive environment, Thomas brings a wealth of experience and skill that Coach Kelvin Sampson is eager to utilize.

A Proven Scorer and Playmaker

In his three collegiate seasons, Dedan Thomas Jr. has demonstrated impressive scoring ability and court vision. With over 1,100 points and 400 assists against just 150 turnovers, he has proven himself as an effective point guard capable of managing the game’s tempo while making smart decisions under pressure.

Coach Sampson expressed enthusiasm about Thomas's arrival: "Our point guard position has been the strength of our program. We have never not had a great point guard. Now, we slide to Dedan Thomas Jr., and we will just keep going," he stated. “DJ is a point guard's point guard. He can manage the game, and he understands the game at a freakishly high level.”

Thomas's ability to penetrate defenses and create opportunities for his teammates will undoubtedly elevate the performance of all guards on the team. His savvy play style allows him to think creatively on the court, ensuring that every player benefits from his presence.

The Journey Through College Basketball

Before joining Houston, Thomas had an impactful stint at LSU during the 2025-26 season. Despite facing challenges due to injury—missing half of the season—he averaged an impressive 15.3 points and 6.5 assists per game across 16 games played. Notably, he shined in key matchups with standout performances such as scoring 23 points against Boston College and recording 22 points alongside 12 assists against Southern Miss.

Prior to his time at LSU, Thomas played two seasons at UNLV where he followed in his father’s footsteps—Dedan Thomas Sr., an All-American from 1991-1994—by making waves in college basketball himself. In his sophomore year (2024-25), he averaged 15.6 points per game while being recognized as an All-Mountain West Conference Third Team member after showcasing five games with over 20 points each.

His freshman year was nothing short of spectacular; leading all freshmen nationally in assist average with a record-setting total of 174 assists for that season earned him accolades such as Freshman of the Year within Mountain West Conference circles.

High School Stardom

Before stepping onto college courts, Dedan was already making headlines in Nevada high school basketball as a star player at Liberty High School. He averaged an impressive 22.8 points along with five assists per game during his senior year, leading his team to consecutive state championship appearances while earning Gatorade Player of the Year honors in Nevada.

With one final year of eligibility remaining, expectations are high for Thomas as he seeks not only personal success but also aims to lead Houston back into contention on both conference and national stages. Welcome to H-Town, Dedan!
