Championship pedigree just touched down in H-Town, Cougars. The University of Houston women’s basketball program didn’t just add a player Tuesday — it added a proven winner. Head coach Matthew Mitchell announced the arrival of Esmeralda Enriquez, the 2026 NJCAA Division I Player of the Year and the engine behind a historic national title run at Eastern Arizona College.

At 5-foot-8, the Yakima, Washington native brings more than numbers—she brings control, confidence, and a championship edge. Enriquez arrives fresh off leading Eastern Arizona to its first-ever NJCAA National Championship, the kind of résumé that doesn’t just fill a roster spot—it raises expectations.

During the 2025-26 season, she showcased her exceptional talent by averaging an impressive 15.7 points per game while maintaining a solid shooting percentage of 45.7% from the field. Alongside her scoring prowess, she contributed 4.3 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game, solidifying her role as a key player on the team.

Her performance in the national tournament was nothing short of spectacular, where she averaged 18.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.5 steals. In the championship game, she led her team with a standout performance of 16 points, earning her the prestigious title of National Championship Tournament Most Valuable Player and a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

Enriquez's hard work did not go unnoticed; she received accolades as a member of the NJCAA D1 First Team All-America and was selected for the ACCAC All-Region First Team.

Before making her mark at Eastern Arizona, Enriquez played at North Idaho College during her freshman year, where she earned recognition as the Scenic West Athletic Conference Player of the Year. In just 27 games, she averaged an impressive 18.2 points per game, with an outstanding shooting percentage of 48.1% from the field.

Welcome to H-Town, Esmeralda!
